Our 2020 partnership with CALM

After raising £21,842.66 for the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) in 2020, we’re delighted to say that we’ll be working with this wonderful charity for another year!

The year just gone was a difficult one and we were limited in the number of fundraisers we could run, so by extending our partnership with CALM we hope to give them the full level of support we can.

Customer Liaison Officer Charlotte Hills has been our charity champion since November and will be leading on our continued partnership with CALM.

“2020 was a year like no other. Through my role at mhs homes, I have seen the impact that COVID-19 has had on families’ finances and mental health. I have seen the isolation and loneliness it has caused,” said Charlotte.

“The true impact that coronavirus has had on mental health and suicide rates remains unknown, however I think every one of us can say we have been affected. I hope we can build on the fantastic achievement of last year, raising over £21,000 for CALM to assist them in providing much needed support.”

How did we do it?

The charity was chosen by former Governance Administrator Sophia Minors-Wickham and she kicked off the fundraising with a quiz for colleagues and their friends and family in January that raised just under £300. This was the first of three quizzes throughout the year which contributed a total of £489.

In May last year, 24 colleagues planned to take part in the “Three Peaks Challenge”, which involves climbing the three highest peaks in Wales; Mount Snowdon, Cadair Idris and Pen Y Fan.

Sadly, the challenge was postponed due to the pandemic, but we’re hopeful it’ll go ahead this year and over £970 has already been raised through registrations and sponsorships.

That didn’t stop us from moving forward that month though, with former charity champion Sophia pulling in £538 by taking part in CALM’s virtual 10k homerun challenge.

In June there were two gestures of wonderful generosity from colleagues. One former colleague retired after many years of service and chose for her retirement gift to be a donation to CALMThat was followed up by another colleague, donating his “hero bonus”, which had been awarded as a way of thanking him for his work on the frontline amidst the pandemic.

We didn’t just have mhs colleagues contributing to our efforts, with Customer Team Manager Claire Carter’s son Rob, banking £250 with his virtual “Route 66 Challenge”. Starting last year and with just a treadmill and his legs, Rob aims to cover a staggering 2,220 miles all in aid of CALM and in memory of his late father.

September saw our Chief Executive Ash take to the water to complete his incredible 18-mile swim across Ullswater and Windermere. Ash was in the water for a total of 14 hours across four days - a truly impressive achievement, matched by an equally impressive £6,067.50 raised!

The following month, team mhs banded together to take part in the “Lost Hours Walk” – an activity set up by CALM to raise funds and awareness for suicide. Despite not taking on the challenge with CALM physically, together our colleagues walked a fantastic 164.1 miles and with our Leadership Team adding £2 to every mile we walked, we contributed over £8,000 to CALM’s total of £267,000 – their target was £30,000!

To end the year, Customer Liaison Officer Ann-Marie Stedman suggested that each colleague receive £10 to donate to one of three charitiesin lieu of our usual Christmas party which had been cancelled due to coronavirus. CALM was of course one of these charities and received £1,070 as a result of this lovely idea from Ann-Marie.

These are just a few of the many who contributed to this great cause, so a huge well done to everyone involved in last year’s CALM fundraising. To raise over £21,000 is a fantastic achievement, especially in such difficult circumstances!
