mhs homes have partnered with the Gillingham Street Angels to provide furniture to those in need.

The scheme, starting next month, will see unwanted items of furniture and other items collected from empty mhs homes properties by the team at Gillingham Street Angels, once customers have moved out. The charity will then reuse, repurpose and recycle these items to help those in need.

mhs homes Estates Delivery Manager, Bernard O’Beirne has championed the scheme. He said “Sometimes customers leave behind furniture, white goods, electrical equipment and even clothes when they move out, which all have to be removed before it becomes someone else’s home. By working with Gillingham Street Angels we’re able to reuse furniture and white goods that would otherwise have gone to landfill or even fly-tipped on the streets – and it gets these items to those that need them the most. It's a fantastic initiative that will benefit the local community as well as the environment and we’re proud to be a part of it.”

The scheme has been introduced as Gillingham Street Angels take on additional space in Chatham to be able to provide more furniture, school uniform and sporting equipment to the local community. The charity has seen a sharp increase in people using their services, with approximately 12,000 people now requiring their support each month. To help meet this growing demand, mhs homes have pledged to support the charity however they can, from staff volunteering in their Day for Kent, raising money through the Big Sleep Out event and now the donation of goods and furniture.

Neil Charlick from Gillingham Street Angels said “We’re looking forward to working with mhs homes. By teaming up to provide more furniture, we will be able to help more people across Medway reclaim their independence. We have seen a big spike in people using our services and expect this to continue to grow as the cost of living continues to rise so it is more important than ever for us to have the ongoing support of local businesses like mhs homes.”

Gillingham Street Angels have a mission to help the homeless, members of the community, and vulnerable people of all ages in the Medway towns and surrounding areas. If you have any furniture, clothes or other items that you think might be suitable for donation, you can call them on 01634 819013.
