A-level and GCSE results are out! What advice do leaders at mhs homes have for you?

As students around the country collected their A-Level and GCSE results this week, we asked the leadership team here at mhs what advice they wish they’d received on results day.

“The results you get – whether they’re good or not what you hoped for – will not determine your future success,” said Ashton Freeman, our assistant director of development and sales. “In the end it’s about hard work and attitude and as long as you apply these to any career you choose; you will succeed.”

Our HR lead Nuala Beattie agrees: “The results sheet will not define your whole life; your attitude and drive is just as important.”

“Give yourself a break if things haven’t gone as you wanted them to,” advises Amy Cheswick, our director of customer and transformation.  "Whatever your results, there will be other areas to explore. Be yourself, be curious, ask questions and take every opportunity to learn something different and new.”

Keep an open mind

While results are good motivators for your goals, you don't need to get A*s to have a successful career. And even if you do achieve fantastic results try to keep an open mind about what lies ahead.

“I wish I’d known that you don’t have to go in a straight line with your career,” said our company secretary Louise Humphrey. “I worried so much about what degree to apply for thinking I would stay in a future role for ever – but it didn’t work out like that, and I am glad it didn’t.”

“Be prepared to work for the career you want, this may mean learning skills and knowledge in other roles that will support you into the role you want,” said Gemma Hancock, our executive director of assets & development.

Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. You might find you enjoy something you never imagined would appeal to you. "I never knew how much fun accountancy could be,” said our director of finance Bruce Shelmerdine. “I would have started down this path earlier if I’d known!"

Find your passion

Ultimately, finding the right career path is all about using the skills you enjoy and finding your passion. Our leadership team say they’ve found theirs.

“I love what mhs stands for, providing homes for those who most need it is close to my heart and I believe I genuinely make a difference each day with the work I do,” said Nuala. “This aligns with my moral compass and gets me out of bed in the morning.”

“I chose mhs over a major larger organisation - never regretted the decision as every voice counts and everyone can make a difference at mhs,” said Bruce.

“It’s all about culture, values, and commitment to customers for me," said Amy. "The culture and values felt genuine at mhs from the start of the application process.  There is a strong commitment to be a visible landlord, rooted in our communities and to provide excellent services for our customers.  I also value the commitment to being a great place to work."

“I chose to work for mhs because it was important to me to do a job where I can make a positive difference to our customers’ quality of life,” said our chief executive, Ashley Hook
