Annual golf day raises record sum for local charity

Almost 100 golfers across 25 teams battled it out in gloriously sunny weather at the annual mhs homes golf day, raising a record sum for our Charity of the Year.

The event, which took place on Friday 24 May at the Sittingbourne & Milton Regis Golf Club, certainly did not disappoint, with more than £11,000 raised for the Swale Community Care Project, a Kent-based charity that supports people living in poverty by providing food, clothing and signposting to local community services.

The overall winners on the day were a team from Baily Garner. Other competitions and prizes included a long drive contest, closest to the pin, beat the pro and even a chance to win £10,000 by hitting a hole-in-one.

Ashley Hook, chief executive of mhs homes, said: “Thank you to everyone who supported the mhs homes Charity Golf Day this year. The weather could not have been better and we managed to raise more than £11,000 which is a truly incredible amount of money and a record for this event.

“We’re proud to be supporting such a worthwhile charity which is providing a lifeline for people in desperate need. As a social housing provider our role goes beyond being a landlord and we’re committed to making a difference for local people and communities, through our fundraising efforts but also the support and services we provide.”

We would like to say a huge thank you to our Gold Sponsors for the event, Highview Group, as well as Bronze sponsors, AD Construction Group, Birketts, calfordseaden, Jewsons Partnership Solutions, Phoenix Compliancy Management, Esquire Developments and Philip Pank Partnership.

Dan Marsh, a trustee of the Swale Community Care Project, said: “Since we were set up a year ago, the charity has supported more than 400 people, with 2.5 tonnes of food distributed so far to those in need.

“Sadly the need for our services is growing, particularly amongst young people - in the past year, 48% of people we’ve helped are under the age of 18. We’re so grateful for the support from local organisations which is so important in helping us reach everyone who needs our help and we couldn’t do what we do without days like today. Thank you to everyone who has donated and supported us over the past year.”

The charity has recently agreed rent terms with Age UK Kent Rivers and Sittingbourne & Sheppey Helping Ukraine for a combined charity venture to provide a Sittingbourne Community Hub. This will include the charity’s existing foodbank, as well as a new clothes bank, community café and community fridge / freezer. It is hoped that the hub will open in mind-July, so watch this space!
