Homelessness charity presented with £11k cheque from Big Sleep Out

Yesterday we were joined by the Mayor of Medway to present local homelessness charity, Porchlight, with a cheque for more than £11,000 - money raised from the mhs homes Big Sleep Out in January.

More than 40 people braved the cold weather on Friday 26 January to take part in the fundraising challenge. Teams from mhs homes, Birketts solicitors, calfordseaden, Moxy Property Consultants and more were joined by the Mayor of Medway, Nina Gurung, and councillor Sharon Jackson.

Ashley Hook, chief executive of mhs homes, said: “This event not only raises money for charity, but also raises awareness of the challenges faced by people who have no choice but to sleep out every night. Everyone has the right to a decent home and as a local housing provider we have an important role in helping to end the housing crisis here in Kent.”

Mayor of Medway, Cllr Nina Gurung, added: “Homeless people in our communities are in crisis. Living on the streets makes people so vulnerable physically, mentally and emotionally. They need our collective support and understanding.”

The total amount raised was £11,606.18. The money will make a huge difference to people's lives and ensure Porchlight can continue to support some of the most vulnerable people in Kent.

Porchlight’s Mim Oliver said: “We’re thrilled that the mhs homes Big Sleep Out has raised so much money. It couldn’t come at a more critical time: our charity has been hit by massive funding cuts. Support like this means we can continue to be there for people who have nowhere else to turn for help.

“We’re so grateful to everyone who took part in the sleep out. I know many were moved by the experience. It gave them a glimpse of what life can be like for people affected by homelessness, especially when they returned home in the morning to shower and sleep in a bed… things that everyone should have access to.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to everybody who slept out and anyone who sponsored them. Together, we're working towards a safe home, fairer future and better life for everyone.”

How the money can help change lives:

£250 could cover 10 hours of support for people who are sleeping on the streets

£500 could provide 16 basic welcome packs of food, toiletries and cleaning products for people moving into homelessness accommodation

£1,250 could prevent five people from becoming homeless by supporting them in their own home for one month, helping them to sustain their tenancy
