Due to an extended period of warm weather, UK households are being urged to pour boiling water into their wheelie bins to prevent an increase in maggots.
Maggots thrive in hot conditions and confined areas likes bins, particularly when there’s food waste.
Using hot water along with disinfectant or bleach can eliminate maggot eggs before they hatch. Or you can just use boiling water on its own if they are already present. Other tips to help prevent maggots include moving bins to shaded areas and making sure food bags are tightly sealed.
