Fire safety in our blocks
We work in partnership with Kent Fire and Rescue and independent fire safety experts to make sure we keep you safe.
Our fire safety experts carry out regular fire risk assessments on all of our blocks. We do this so we can:
- Assess the risks in each block
- Get recommendations for making our block safer
- Identify gaps in our fire stopping
- Comply with fire regulations
If you'd like to see a copy of the fire risk assessment for your block please email fire.safety@mhs.org.uk and we'll share with you within 20 working days.
We regularly check communal areas, to make sure that:
- Escape routes and corridors are clear so you can exit easily and fire and rescue services can move around safely in an emergency
- Door closers, which are important to stopping fire spreading, are working on your fire doors
- Fire action notices are on display telling you what to do in the event of a fire and if the plan is to stay put or to evacuate
What to do if you have a stay put policy
If there's a fire in your flat
Leave immediately. Get everyone in your home out, close the door behind you and leave the building. When you are safe to do so, call 999.
If there's a fire in another flat
- Unless your flat is being affected by smoke or fire - stay put. There's fire protection provided in the building and the floors, walls and doors of each flat
- When you stay put, you reduce the risk of entering a smoky corridor unnecessarily and possibly being overwhelmed by smoke
- Staying put also means that fire fighters can tackle the fire safely and quickly without being delayed by anyone coming down the stairs
