The importance of home contents insurance

Home contents insurance is designed to cover the cost of financial losses caused by theft, fire, flood or water damage from a burst pipe.

We do insure our buildings but we don't insure your contents and personal belongings. That’s why it’s really important that you have home contents insurance.

There are lots of insurance providers out there. A simple Google search will provide a list of many well known providers, or you can use a price comparison website. You can choose what's most important to you – it might be your phone, TV, furniture or even jewellery?

What can home contents insurance cover?

  • Fire damage
  • Theft
  • Storm and flood damage
  • Damage caused by water or oil leaks
  • Lost or stolen keys
  • The contents of your freezer if it breaks down
  • Accidental damage to TVs and home entertainment equipment
  • Damage caused by a leaking washing machine or a burst pipe
  • The contents of sheds and garages
  • Student's possessions living away from home
  • Accidental damage to sanitary fixtures such as toilets and washbasins
  • Extended accidental damage cover
  • Mobility scooters/wheelchairs
  • Hearing aids

Limits and exclusions usually apply. This will depend on your policy, the insurance provider you choose and the type of cover you go for. The above are just some examples of what might be covered, as well as some that may be optional extras.

It's important when you're getting a quote that you check what you're covered for, and what you're not. If you already have home contents insurance, you can check your existing policy to see what your cover includes.
